Book drive for prisoners

The Lansing, Kansas state prison is in need of books for the prisoner library, but there is no budget for new books. So we are collecting books of all genres to help them stock their selves.  So clean out your closets or buy an extra copy of your favorite book to share.  Please bring your donations to church with you this Sunday.

2016 HealthEd Connect Ointment Drive

We are again collecting triple-antibiotic ointment for HealthEd Connect.  Two weeks ago, Sherri Kirkpatrick, Co-founder and President of HealthEd Connect, shared with us some miraculous stories of the healing brought by the triple-antibiotic ointment as well as other wonderful work the organization has been apart of.  Sherri even shared a video of the African health workers’ reaction when opening a box of donated triple-antibiotic ointment – the women broke into song and dance and spontaneously rejoiced in the gift because they knew how many lives the medication would touch.  To learn more about HeathEd Connect, visit their website at www.healthedconnect.org.

How you can help:

  • Donate 1oz or greater tubes of Triple Antibiotic Ointment (the generic brands work as well as name brands and bigger tubes are easier to transport than smaller ones);
  • Donate money for the purchase of the ointment;
  • Ask your friends and family for donations; and
  • Pray for those who will be receiving the ointment.

Please have all donations to the church by June 25th.

Another Exciting Night of Volunteering at Harvesters!

HarvesterslogoWednesday, January 27th, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, we will be volunteering at Harvesters in lieu of our Wednesday Night Service.  If you can attend, please let Tracy know.  All volunteers must meet before 6:00PM at Harvesters (3801 Topping Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64129) or arrange your own carpool.  Also, you must wear closed-toed shoes and be dressed for warehouse labor.  We’ve had a lot of fun at this volunteer activity in the past, and I look forward to another opportunity to fellowship and help our community.

Also, we will be collecting in-kind and monetary donations to take with us that Wednesday.  There are 3 ways to give: 1) donate online at http://colberncofchrist.harvestersvfd.org/, 2) write a check payable to Harvesters – Community Food Network, or 3) bring in-kind donations to church or Harvesters.  The most needed in-kind donations are: Canned vegetables, Canned fruit, Boxed meals – (Hamburger Helper, Pasta Roni, and Mac & Cheese), Canned meat/tuna, Peanut butter & jelly (no glass jars), Canned soup, Cereal – hot and cold, Soap, Shampoo, Deodorant, and Toilet Paper.

Harvester’s advertises, “If every volunteer brought just one can of food when they came to volunteer, we could provide an additional 4,166 meals per month.”  So I encourage everyone to give at least one can of food to this drive.

Hope to see you there!!

Outreach International Chili Cook-off Sunday

Don’t forget to bring your appetites, wallets, and (if you want to enter the contest) a crockpot of chili to church this Sunday.  After the service, we will be joining in the fellowship hall for a chili lunch to benefit Outreach International.  You will vote for your favorite chili with your cash.  The chili that raises the most money is the winner.  Will our reigning champ, Michael, sweep again or will we crown a new winner?  Find out Sunday!

NOTE: Due to the kitchen remodel, be aware that we do not have a kitchen for clean-up, so if you enter a chili into the contest, please bring all the supplies you need and prepare to take home your dirty utensils.

Ointment for Africa

We have completed our HealthEd Connect triple antibiotic ointment drive.  (For more dIMG_5386etails about the drive, see HealthEd Connect Ointment Drive post from April 21, 2015.)  We collected 111.5 ounces of ointment!  And check out the sweet box the kids designed for the collection – it’s packed full.  Thank you so much for your participation.  I know the team at HealthEd Connect will greatly appreciate your kindness.

HealthEd Connect Ointment Drive

For the next few weeks, we are collecting new tubes of triple antibiotic ointment for HealthEd Connect.

Last October, Sherri and Jac Kirkpatrick made a presentation in adult Sunday School about HealthEd Connect.  HealthEd Connect’s mission is to empower women and children through evidence-based health, education, and advocacy programs.  They work with community health workers in Zambia, Malawi, DR Congo, and Nepal.  Visit their website at www.healthedconnect.org for more information.

One thing that has proved beneficial to community health is triple antibacterial ointment for open wounds (such as Neosporin(R)).  Sherri shared with me some recent stories about how this ointment has changed people’s lives.  Recently in Malawi, a couple was preparing for their wedding when the groom found out that the bride had a deep leg wound.  Knowing this wound would be something he’d have to deal with for years, the groom called off the wedding.  One of the HealthEd Connect health workers heard the story and went to visit the wife.  Though she suffered with the wound for years, the wound was healed within a week after the health workers cleaned and treated the wound with the triple antibiotic ointment.  Hearing this, the groom resumed the wedding.

Similarly, in Nepal a man who also suffered from a deep leg wound for years, heard about this “magic” ointment the health workers had that could cure wounds such as his.  He walked four hours to find a health worker that was able to clean and treat his wound.

In these parts of the world, ulcers can last for years.  HealthEd Connect is assisting these communities, not just by providing ointment, but by educating people on how to live a more healthy life.

So why don’t they use more of this ointment in Africa?  Unfortunately, this medication is not easy to come by in Africa.  Therefore, HealthEd Connect buys the medication in the states and takes it with them when they go on mission visits.  Their next mission visit is in May, and they would love to take over a bunch of ointment with them.  So, for the next few weeks, we will be collecting triple antibacterial ointment (the cheap brands work just as well as the name brands) to donate to HealthEd Connect.  Please bring your donation of triple antibacterial ointment by Sunday, May 3rd.
